Bell Cake by Charm City Cakes

Um… can we just take a moment to admire the beauty of this cake created by Duff Goldman and the gang at Charm City Cakes in Baltimore? Um… really, really incredible. The detail is fantastic. It’s just like blue chinaware.

And if you haven’t already, you should try to catch an episode of their reality tv show on the Food Network, Ace of Cakes. Pretty intense what those cake makers have to deal with. You’ll never see pastries the same.

Tamago

A new Japanese fashion label, Tamago (which means egg in Japanese), opened in Amsterdam this month. While it has nothing to do with weddings, they have some lovely clothing, as well as beautiful decoration and interior. I found this inspiring as the theme of egg was carried out in the store, with subtlety and elegance. Here are some photos from the opening party:

I was most drawn to the leaves decorating the rectangular vases – so natural, yet so geometric. The yellow and white chrysanthemums were also a nice way to say egg!

Paper pockets and egg carton trays were also a creative (and eco-friendly) way to serve party foods :) I used to fold those origami cups with my cousin all the time when we were little, it’s actually so easy to do. Look up paper cup, and you can definitely DIY.

Max Wanger

I was floored when stumbling upon the photography of Max Wanger, particularly this dreamy engagement shoot of Joanna and Alex with a pretty pink balloon. And just when people were beginning to say that balloon shoots were getting tiresome, I see something like this and it makes me swoon!

You can swoon too by seeing the rest of his collection here or following his blog.

Robin Cameron

I love abstract illustration and Robin Cameron, who is a Canadian artist but based in New York, has an extensive portfolio of them.

I really like the affect of this dream-like photography with gouache overlays.

She works a lot with just forms and texture, mostly watercolour, collage and graphite. It really lets you appreciate the quality of the medium, and gives off a romantic feeling without really knowing what the content really is. It’s just so raw that it draws me in instantly and without any real explanation :) And that’s what love is like right? Just a gut feeling, and plain beauty.

Real Wedding: Rachel & Evan

I met Rachel through my friend Victoria (featured previously in our Real Weddings section). I helped complete her stationery set with Thank You cards, which was a complete pleasure. This is her story…

the happy couple

Rachel and Evan were married at Deer Creek Golf Club in Ajax, Ontario on August 22, 2009. The couple don’t actually live anywhere near Ajax, but picked it because they wanted a place that none of their guests had been to and they just happened to fall in love with the spot after taking a tour. Even luckier, the building coincidentally matched their wedding colours: green and white.

the gang

I’m not usually a big fan of green, but I adore how light-hearted and sweet it comes off by using the various shades (as seen with the cupcakes and candies below).

Speaking of cupcakes…

…it was extremely apparent at the wedding that Rachel and Evan both have a huge sweet tooth. They featured two different desserts following the meal (one for men and one for ladies)  and had a candy station that Rachel put together herself in green and white tones. It featured rock candy, Jelly Bellys, gummies, Hershey Kisses etc.  Guests were even witnessed using the rock candy as microphones to sing with while dancing at the reception. How fun! And if that weren’t enough, they even had a late night sweet table with tons of cakes and pies and cookies, as well as a chocolate fountain. Perhaps followed by some gut ache (but so worth it).

Rachel’s big goal for the overall event: being able to look back at the pictures in 20 years and not go ‘OMG, what was I thinking?’ Mission achieved? I think so. :)

Congrats again guys! Hope you’re enjoying the newly-wed phase.

UPDATE: Just wanted to mention that more of Rachel & Evan’s lovely wedding photos can be viewed here at the HRM Photography blog.

Gifts That Grow

I’m going to share this story with you, only because I am sure that my 70-year-old grandmother does not read blogs. So, I always know when my grandmother has been to a wedding or banquet of some sort, because our house will have a lot of flowers. She will always feel entitled to taking home the host’s floral decorations at the end of the night, because she believes they paid good money for it, and they can’t possibly have a use for it after anyway. One time she came to visit my school residence, and she brought all these roses to decorate my room. My friends that visited after were convinced that I was keeping a secret beau, even when I was single and not dating at the time.

So the point of that story, was to tell you how much people in general (like my grandmother) like flowers and plants. Everyone prefers a little life in their space, if not a companion then in the form of a pet or a plant. On top of being eco-friendly, it’s a good idea to give your guests a memorable gift that grows :) I’m an advocate of environmentally-conscious design (I know it sounds cliche, but really everyone should be!) and therefore I’m really excited to be sharing these gift ideas with you.

UK Designer, Jamie Wieck has a business card, A Bloomin’ Designer, that is creative and delightful to receive. This design has received a lot of attention on the internet, for being so simple and so clever. Just a plain paper pocket, and some seeds inside, can leave a smile on your guests’ faces.

Another brilliant idea that I came across, was these packed succulents from Sol X Sol, Japan. They carry all sorts of gift kits, with DIY instructions to plant them later. The packaging and instructions are also really simple. They almost feel like little cupcakes in those containers.

SolxSol

And lastly, one of my favourite ideas is plantable paper, which means seeds were placed into the pulp when making the paper, so that after you’re done with it, you can just add water and a plant will grow out of the paper fibres. The idea is really catching on, but I don’t really know who thought of it. I first saw it from Pangea Organics‘ packaging in 2006 (probably because it was designed by IDEO, and I follow what this company does) and then I started seeing greeting cards with plantable paper from The Paper Place and Pistachio in Toronto. From Etsy, I really like these ones by Round Robin Press because they are also letterpress :) which makes me extra happy.

So if you are looking for some green gift ideas, you can consider giving a real plant that will last and grow :)

Pretty Pomanders

Pomanders are a great bouquet alternative. They’re usually given to flower girls who have an easier time not dropping or losing their flowers when they happen to be tied around their wrist, but I say: why not give them to the other girls in your wedding party too? You could even line your ceremony aisle with them. Check out these lovely creations by MackensleyDesigns with various coloured ribbons and styles to choose from.

Real Simple makes it real simple

Most girls find themselves ‘caught up in the moment’ long after the big question has been popped. And eventually they have to ask themselves: “what next?!” Real Simple has the answer.

Real Simple Weddings 2009

I realize 2009 is coming to a close soon, but it doesn’t mean that this guide is by any means out-of-date. The Real Simple Weddings (2009 Edition) is something I just happened to pick up at the drug mart on my way home from work one day. This was the moment I thought: “I really want to get serious about this wedding career thing”.  And what better way to start than with purchasing a copy of my own wedding guide? Even though it is aimed at blushing brides-to-be, it’s a comprehensive book for anyone interested in the entire wedding planning process. With the simple, clean style that can be expected of the Real Simple brand, you are introduced to 3 main sections: Your Plan, Your Ceremony and Your Reception, and all the fun little details that each entails. Trust me, they get detailed! And you wouldn’t want anything less, especially if you are one of the lucky people involved in the actual planning.

For now I get to just sit back and consider this read a ‘part of my education’, but who knows… maybe one day I’ll put it to good use on a firsthand basis. I highly suggest that if you feel even slightly overwhelmed with planning any portion of this important event, go out and get yourself a copy, stat!
