Etsy Open Studios

Lately with all the excessive crafting I’ve been doing, I’ve been dreaming of having my own studio space. I know I have a desk, with my computer and books etc., but… *siiigh, what about an entire room, ahem, studio dedicated to my art? Right now it’s just a dream, but maybe someday… For now though (especially if you’re like me), you can explore the Etsy Open Studios Flickr pool where you can visit the studios of Etsy artists, far and wide. All artists, crafters, tinkerers, makers-of-all-things are welcome to share photos of themselves, workshops, creative zones, craft spaces, and studios. And if you do upload, you might even be featured on the Etsy Blog. Woo Hoo! As for right now, I will just start gathering inspiration for decorating my future studio.

Happy Friday!

Luci Everett’s “Party”

Party by Luci Everett is a beautiful, handmade, french-folded book playfully exploring the theme of “party”. It was the perfect inspiration for the stationery line I’m currently working on. Thank you, Cheryl, for sending me the link! It’s always appreciated.

Lettercult

I love letters! And it’s a good thing I do. They are an essential tool in design. They can come in all shapes and forms, and can be experimented with in a variety of materials and formats. Over at LetterCult.com, artists from all over submit their remarkable custom letter work to compete in a monthly ‘AlphaBattle’. If you think you have the creative chops, you should submit yours too! Or just head over to the site and admire the creativity. You’ll be surprised at what some people come up with.

Galerie Au Chocolat

I treated myself to a bar of this other day from Galerie Au Chocolat because…

a) I had a store credit at Pistachio
b) I had a craving for chocolate
c) I loved the simple line illustrations and typography. Yes. Sometimes I do “judge books by their cover” and this book… errrr… chocolate bar was saying to me “I taste awesome because my design is so awesome… oh, and p.s. I’m fair trade”. So what was a girl to do?

I wish more companies had the guts to go with a design approach like this.

Robot a Day

I’m a nerd. My favourite things include: dinosaurs, sharks (who are obviously just modern dinosaurs), monsters, and robots. So of course when I stumbled upon the art project Robot a Day, I had to post about it.

Featured above: Amelia Earhart bot, Pigeon bot, Beaver bot, Yeti bot, Kangaroo bot, Pirate bot, Zombie bot, Dragon bot, Luchador bot, Slow Loris bot, Donkey bot, and Nerd bot. These darn little characters are like Pokemon, I just want to collect them all! I think they would make an amazing gift though. So pick one out that matches a friend’s personality and watch their face light up.

Seven Spoons

I know many of us get bombarded with sweet treats and holiday eats this time of year, but I think the most rewarding experience is making a little something from scratch for yourself and others to share. And with all that time off, what trouble is it to spend a little portion of it in the kitchen? Even if you’re not the best cook or baker, put yourself up to the challenge! Invite a friend over, or your significant other, or any family members that want to lend a helping hand. Cooking or baking in a team is a great way to spend some quality time together and have a bit of fun too. So if you’re looking for a mouth-watering recipe, I suggest Tara’s blog Seven Spoons. Her photography is so delightful! She’s and Ontarian like myself and has had a fair amount of media attention in the past year, so bravo Tara!

All of Tara’s blog recipes are listed here, and scroll through her beautiful food photography on Flickr.

Soft Maps

Have I ever mentioned how much I love maps as visual inspiration? Well considering this fact, stumbling upon these beautifully crafted Soft Map quilts is probably going to be one of the most exciting things to happen to me today. Soft-Maps © are quilted maps of cities and neighborhoods created by Haptic Lab Inc. that represent someone’s unique place in the world. Wrap your children in them, have a picnic, pull them close during the next Nor’easter. As a keepsake, a Soft-Map serves as an intimate reminder of home: where you’re from and where you belong. In a world that is increasingly digitized and remote, a quilted Soft-Map provides an expressive way to reconnect with your surroundings.

Not only beautiful, these blankets can be used as a mnemonic tool. As your child grows up with a Soft Map, they learn to read their neighborhood and its landmarks in a tactile, easily remembered way.

Soft-Maps are the 2x winner of the 2009 Apartment Therapy Design Showcase and have been featured in Coolhunting, PSFK, Brooklyn Based, L.A. Times and the Cooper Hewitt’s 2009 Reader’s Choice National Design Awards. The quilts are now offered in three different varieties: knotted baby quilts, readymade machine-stitched maps, and custom handmade maps.”

Check out all the details at Haptic Lab’s site.

With Love type series

The With Love type series is a gift range which is based around the form of the ampersand created by Scott Marc Berry. The designs incorporate the ampersand into sayings or phrases that can represent particular annual occasions. The range is extended across cards and gift bags.
