Happy Listening: What Are You Doing New Years Eve?

Something wonderful to take you into the weekend. A delightful rendition by two of my favourite people… errr… celebrity crushes. Thank you Zooey and Joseph for making the end of the year so sweet.

Happy Listening: Hey Ya

I’m going to be a little short and sweet today. Still recovering from the long week and weekend of work. But since my work today revolves around music research, I figured I had to pause to write a happy listening post.

This cover of Hey Ya is a soft acoustic version by Mat Weddle (aka Obadiah Parker) that has had a hold on my heart for the last few years. Enjoy!

Happy Listening: Digital Love

This one’s a triple threat from two different bands. These quirky and cheerful indie renditions of Daft Punk’s Digital Love have me dancing around the apartment and singing along loudly. Seriously… my cat would confirm this since I almost tripped over him with my happy dancing.

Aphabeat’s acoustic version is my favourite, so I saved it for last. It’s impossible not to hop and spin around to this one. It’s just too cute to resist!

Happy Listening: Book Of Love

Originally by Peter Gabriel, I’ve found this sweetly sung cover of Book of Love by Nataly Dawn from the American indie duo Pomplamoose.  It’s a raw acoustic love story painted quite literally.

Happy Listening!

Happy Listening: I’ll Try Anything Once

The Strokes - I'll Try Anything Once

I’ll Try Anything Once is an early demo version of the more recognized You Only Live Once by The Strokes. While incredibly tender and acoustic in nature, this version has some serious sentimental value to me. It was perhaps one of the best nights I’ve had in a long time (or possibly ever): the night I went to the Julian Casablancas concert in Toronto this spring with my boyfriend and two best friends. I’ve never been one for double dates before… but I suppose when you find another awesome couple to hang out with, it makes all the difference. I melted over this track that Julian surprised us all with. It’s also featured in the trailer for Sofia Coppola’s new film, Somewhere.

Enjoy.

Happy Listening: Sea of Love

Remember how I mentioned that I’m a Cat Power fan? Well that got me thinking that one of her songs deserves a post. And since her full-length version of How Can I Tell You wasn’t available, I decided to mention another cover: Sea of Love.

Cat Power - Sea of Love

You may recognize it from the 2007 comedy/drama film Juno. It’s the scene where… wait, I’d rather not spoil the ending for those of you who haven’t seen it. If you haven’t seen it, get on it. And if you haven’t heard this song yet, you’d better get on that too. Let’s just say as soon as this song chimed in during that scene, my cheeks were soaked with tears. (It only lasted a minute though, I swear).
