City of Craft Sneak Peek

Last week was such a blur, I feel like I’m still spinning a bit. But some great things certainly took place. Like for instance two fantastic shoots with Scarlet O’Neill, including this little taster of what’s in the works for the upcoming City of Craft show. This is just a small snippet of what’s to come. And I have to fill in the rest of that backdrop with more fabric, but I had to share since I’m so giddy with the progress so far.

City of Craft 2011

If you’ve missed the excited tweets or Facebook posts, I’m proud to announce here on the blog that I will be an official vendor along with Scarlet O’Neill at this year’s City of Craft. The show will be taking place December 10 & 11 and it’s bound to be the best yet! The hours are Saturday 11:00am-6:00pm and Sunday 11:00am-5:00pm with admission only $2 – whoo! It’s rare to get cheap admission to anywhere these days, so I hope that motivates you all to come out.

The show has also expanded this year to feature 2 amazing locations: The Theatre Centre at 1087 Queen Street West and the Thrush Holmes Empire gallery at 1093 Queen Street West. I’ll be in the second one with a fun interactive photobooth. Crazy, whacky and beautifully crafted props will be available for everyone to shoot with, so bring your besties (best friends and best outfit) and get free professional photos of the amazing time you’ll have! See you then friends! xo

Maricor Maricar

I’ve seen this work trickling on Pinterest, but coming across a full, detailed blog post on Plenty of Colour dedicated to Maricor Maricar had me in awe. And this awe continued when I ventured onto their official site. Their stitched and embroidered typographic work is stunning and anything but average. I love the use of colour and high degree of experimentation. Now I’m itching to get out my embroidery floss and ribbon and attempt something typographic with these materials for my next project. Especially since I’ve been considering it for some time now…

Ice Cream Cone Piñata

Ice cream is one of my most favourite desserts, especially in the summertime. But an ice cream cone piñata? Now that’s just gold! Check out the process of how it was made by Sarah Parrott here. It seems relatively simple, actually. Just a lot of newspaper, glue, and craft time. If my birthday wasn’t in February, I would definitely want one.

Happy Reading: Print Workshop

My latest read is Print Workshop: Hand Printing Techniques and Truly Original Projects by Christine Schmidt. As of recent, I have been yearning to expand upon my printing techniques at the studio, so I thought this would be an encouraging shove in the right direction.

The book covers a lot of basics that I am already familiar with in terms of block and stamp printing, but also dives into other areas that are new and inspiring to me, including image transfer and sun printing. Very exciting stuff! I can’t wait to experiment more. Recommended for those who like to get messy and creative with new tools and techniques.

Action!

Not too long ago, I had the amazing Scarlet O’Neill over to capture some action shots of me at work.

Now although my actual studio is a little ‘under construction’ at this point, I have made some exciting plans to vamp it up. I don’t want to reveal everything yet, but the plans are already in action. More details to be revealed soon, so stay tuned to see the process. I’m so giddy about it!

Etsy Open Studios

Lately with all the excessive crafting I’ve been doing, I’ve been dreaming of having my own studio space. I know I have a desk, with my computer and books etc., but… *siiigh, what about an entire room, ahem, studio dedicated to my art? Right now it’s just a dream, but maybe someday… For now though (especially if you’re like me), you can explore the Etsy Open Studios Flickr pool where you can visit the studios of Etsy artists, far and wide. All artists, crafters, tinkerers, makers-of-all-things are welcome to share photos of themselves, workshops, creative zones, craft spaces, and studios. And if you do upload, you might even be featured on the Etsy Blog. Woo Hoo! As for right now, I will just start gathering inspiration for decorating my future studio.

Handmade Weddings

For so long I have admired and been inspired by the work of Hello! Lucky. They describe themselves as letterpress and design specialists who will not rest until you’re absolutely thrilled! (I hear that!).

I had some gift card money left over at Indigo so I treated myself to their latest release, Handmade Weddings, written in collaboration with stylist extraordinaire and former Martha Stewart Weddings senior style editor Shana Faust. If you’re like me, and DIY is something you crave for everyday you wake up, then this is a book for you. Oh yes, and it might help if you’re getting married since all the crafts revolve around that occasion. But I think it suits me well, as I work with many brides and grooms, catering to that special day.

The book is perfect for personalizing too, as it is sectioned by various styles, from Retro Homespun to Modern Classic. So the next time you’re at the book store, take a peak!

Nonpareil Magazine

Nonpareil Issue1

An amazing new project has surfaced from two famous bloggers, Kristen of Paper Crave and Maddy from Inspired Bride, called Nonpareil Magazine. It’s an online magazine filled with clever DIY projects, inspiring ideas, and downloadable printables and templates to use. The first issues titled Beautiful on a Budget was just released 2 days ago.
