Happy Listening: La Vie En Rose

Friday, February 12th, 2010

During this chaotic phase of transition, I kind of lost inspiration. Time away from my computer has made me realize how much I love blogging, but I can’t afford to not keep up with researching on a daily basis, otherwise I lose touch with what’s going on within the field. So much happens day-to-day that if you skip a few, you miss quite a bit. You lose focus. And then where do you pick up again?

As a little Valentine’s treat I decided to write a post about one of my favourite love stories. A movie, actually. And it’s the thing that has me inspired again. This is how it came up…

After seeing Nine this week, I fell in love with Marion Cotillard all over again. She’s nothing less than spectacular. Lovely. Classic. A Muse. But this post isn’t about the movie Nine. It’s about my all time favourite movie, and the first time I was introduced to Ms. Cotillard: Jeux d’enfants (English title: Love Me If You Dare).

If you haven’t seen this movie yet, you must! You don’t have to be a crazy romantic to appreciate it either. It’s clever, and colourfully directed, and the acting is…. sorry I could go on and on using a bunch of ridiculous, positive adjectives to describe this movie, or you could just trust me and watch it already. It’s the perfect Valentine’s Day movie in my opinion.

The wonderfully romantic La Vie En Rose sung by Louis Armstrong is used as the theme song, which was first popularized in 1946 by Édith Piaf. The beautiful thing about this newer version though, is that it still has an old-fashioned, classic feel to it, with a jazzy fairytale vibe. This version was also used in Disney/Pixar’s 2008 animated movie Wall-e (another Valentine’s Day movie suggestion).

So here is it… take it away, Pops!

Louis Armstrong - La Vie En Rose

Just a cute side note about the film: the two main stars – Marion Cotillard and Guillaume Canet – have been dating since 2007, so you know the chemistry is for real. ;)
